Yorkshire country singer Jade Helliwell has released her latest single, Look What You’ve Done, which is available to stream now.
Chatting to Erazer ahead of the release, the multi-award-winning singer-songwriter told us what the track is about and how she hopes to record her debut album this summer.
You can listen to the song here:
“Look What You’ve Done is about a situation when you’ve had a bad experience and you just want to be single, but someone in your life keeps making you fall for them,” Jade told us. The track was written in collaboration with fellow UK country singer Laura Oakes, with whom Jade has worked before. “I’ve known Laura for years,” Jade said. “I had this idea, and she had a melody, and we put the two together to form the song. It was really cool because I’ve never written like that before.”
Jade first met Laura as a ‘fangirl’ when attending her concerts. Since then, they have worked together on Jade’s song Woman I Am, and Jade released If I Were You, which was written by Laura. Look What You’ve Done is the first single from what Jade hopes is her debut album.
This past month, she has been running a Kickstarter to raise funds to record her songs. “We’ve got most of the songs nailed,” Jade said. “I just need to reach the target, and then we can green flag it all.” Since our conversation, Jade has exceeded her target of £9200, which means she can begin the album-making-process. “[The Kickstarter] just covers a fraction. “It’s so expensive as an independent artist, but that covers the baseline costs to get the songs recorded.”
Jade is one of the many musicians who are a part of the ever-growing country music scene. One group catapulting the genre into the mainstream are 2025 Eurovision stars Remember Monday. “I love those girls,” Jade said about the What the Hell Just Happened? trio. “I’ve known them for a few years, so it’s really exciting to see what they’re doing at the moment and how they are blowing up. “Their harmonies are some of the best ever.”
If you want to catch Jade Helliwell live in person, she’ll be touring around the UK later this year on the Country Hits Live tour, where she will be covering some of the genre’s classic songs. “It was so fun,” she said about the first leg of the tour, which took place earlier this year. “In the audience, there were three or four generations loving country music.”
Since Jade began her musical career, she has seen a growth in the UK country music fan base, with more musicians and more events popping up all around. “In the last two or three years, the UK country scene has grown massively,” she said. “It’s really cool to see because it means there are more fans and more events. “It means there are more opportunities to actually get out and play music.”
Back in March, Jade had the opportunity to perform at Country 2 Country Festival in London, on a bill with some of the biggest country musicians in the world. “It was so good. I absolutely love that festival,” she said. “It’s one of the best weekends of the year. “It’s great to be surrounded by like-minded people who love country music.”
