Pitbull at BST Hyde Park: the ultimate summer party

A record-breaking day in London brought surprise guests, a new Guinness World Record, and an atmosphere unlike any other.

Nobody does it quite like Mr Worldwide. If there were one artist capable of drawing the biggest crowd BST Hyde Park has ever seen, a record-breaking 69,999 fans, it was always going to be Pitbull. And the records didn’t stop there. Led by BBC Radio 1’s Greg James, an astonishing 22,141 people sported bald caps in a successful Guinness World Record attempt for the largest gathering of people wearing them, before Pitbull had even stepped onstage. Bonkers. “This is history in the making,” Pitbull beamed after arriving onstage, visibly overwhelmed by the moment. “Who would’ve ever thought a first-generation Cuban would ever be in London, record-breaking and record-making?

Record-breaking and record-making: the perfect way to summarise Friday at BST Hyde Park, the place to be for London’s summer concert season. Temperatures soared, but that did little to deter nearly 70,000 fans from throwing themselves into one of the summer’s biggest parties. Hyde Park had already welcomed a stellar lineup this year, including Mumford & Sons, Garth Brooks and Duran Duran, but Friday belonged to Pitbull’s fellow ‘baldies’, who more than rose to the occasion.

Mae Hill opened the Rainbow Stage midafternoon, and was quick to acknowledge the unofficial dress code: “I’m seeing so many bald caps, and I absolutely love it!” she laughed. Her crisp vocals and infectious energy immediately won over the crowd, making it easy to see why she’s an artist to watch. Speaking backstage after her set, Hill admitted the occasion still hadn’t sunk in. “It didn’t feel real. I can’t believe I’m here; the imposter syndrome is real, and I’m just so grateful to be here today.” Like everyone else, she was clearly thrilled to be part of a landmark day in the capital.

After Los Tucanes De Tijuana had fans dancing almost from the moment they stepped onstage, Lil Jon took over the Great Oak Stage and immediately sent Hyde Park into overdrive. Club staples, including Turn Down For What and Shots, turned the field into a giant outdoor nightclub. A sea of sweaty, pale bald helmets bouncing in unison isn’t something you’d expect to witness again anytime soon, but it made for one of the more surreal images of the day. Despite it still being relatively early, Lil Jon’s self-described ‘dream DJ playlist’ felt well-suited for the occasion, and injected the festival with an energy that never let up.

That momentum carried into Tinie Tempah, who stormed onto the stage and somehow raised the bar even higher. Pass Out and Written In The Stars had Hyde Park in full voice, while the sweltering afternoon heat only added to the intensity as fans were riled up for Turn the Music Louder with special guest Katy B. Pairing two hip-hop heavyweights back-to-back proved a masterstroke, setting the tone perfectly for the rest of the evening.

Fifteen years after her last Hyde Park appearance, Kesha returned to the capital looking completely at home on the Great Oak Stage, armed with a catalogue of era-defining pop bangers. TiK ToK kicked things off, instantly sending the crowd into a wave of nostalgic singalongs before she addressed the occasion head-on. “London, I’ve not played Hyde Park in 15 years. Are you ready to f*ck sh*t up?” Many of her biggest hits had been reworked with fresh production, reflecting the freedom she’s found in reclaiming her music on her own terms. There was a palpable sense of empowerment in the crowd as she revisited her noughties classics, with the crowd embracing every word. New single Freedom offered a glimpse into Kesha’s next chapter, while timeless anthems including Die Young, Your Love is My Drug and We R Who We R landed with the same contagious energy they did over a decade ago.

As an independent artist, it means so much to me to be playing one of London’s biggest parks,” she told the crowd before proudly declaring the show “a Kesha Records Production,” a statement that carried far more weight given everything she’s fought to regain. One obvious omission remained from the setlist, however, only heightening the anticipation for the man everyone had come to see.

Pitbull emerged to a deafening reception, making an entrance worthy of Mr Worldwide himself. He launched straight into Don’t Stop the Party, sending Hyde Park from zero to one hundred within seconds. The park became one giant open-air nightclub, as inflatable globes bounced across the crowd, and nearly 70,000 fans refused to stand still in a euphoric delirium. Backed by a sharp live band, dancers and a slick production throughout, Pitbull barely gave London a moment to catch their breath. Hotel Room Service, International Love, and Rain Over Me arrived in quick succession, keeping Hyde Park at full volume as hit after hit landed. Momentum showed no signs of slowing, and Pitbull’s motivational one-liners that have become part of his trademark inspired everyone. “Why dream when you can live it?” he asked, as the crowd roared back in agreement.

It’s easy to forget just how many defining hits Pitbull has been part of over the past two decades until you hear them back-to-back in a live setting. At times, heseamlessly wove together huge medleys, blending Move Shake Drop, Culo and I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho) into one relentless party soundtrack like the perfect host on the aux, while repeated bursts of We Are One (Ole Ola) tapped into the World Cup fever sweeping the country. A run of blockbuster collaborations, from Jennifer Lopez‘s On the Floor to Usher‘s DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love, let Hyde Park completely loose, proving exactly why he’s earned the title of Mr Worldwide. The park was in full party mode from start to finish, and the set became the ultimate nostalgia trip, expertly designed to keep London dancing without missing a beat.

The finale saved the biggest moments for last. After Gasolina, Lil Jon returned to the stage for an explosive performance of Jumpin, before Damn I Love Miami gave way to chants of “Kesha!” echoing across Hyde Park. “I’m gonna bring up the beautiful, sexy, sophisticated, intelligent and powerful Kesha here tonight!” Pitbull announced. Bedlam ensued. Emerging in a bald cap of her own, Kesha joined Pitbull for Timber, their first live performance of the song since 2013. Thirteen years in the making, it was the moment everyone had been waiting for. The crowd erupted, the atmosphere reached another level, and Hyde Park witnessed yet another slice of history on an already historic day.

Los Tucanes De Tijuana also returned, horns in tow, for a thunderous rendition of Fireball, which detonated the crowd into a frenzy. Before bringing his record-breaking, record-making celebration to a close, he paused for something altogether more heartfelt. Explaining that he wanted to honour the city that had embraced him so warmly, he launched into a touching rendition of Oasis’ Wonderwall. London needed little encouragement, belting out every word to the unofficial national anthem for England at the World Cup. “Being here I thought, what was the best way to represent you all,” he told the crowd. “And a good friend of mine said, I think you should do this record.

Give Me Everything brought the night to a triumphant close as fireworks burst overhead. Pitbull quite literally gave BST Hyde Park everything, capping off a landmark day in the capital for his army of ‘baldies’. After spending the evening celebrating broken records, surprise guests and countless career-defining hits, Mr Worldwide signed off with a genuine thank you to the fans who made it all possible. Nobody throws a party quite like he does.
