Fontaines D.C. have released a video for their latest single “The Couple Across The Way”. Taken from their new album Skinty Fia, which debuted at #1 on both the UK and Irish Official Albums Charts, the track’s stark and affecting video (dir. by Polocho) was conceptualised by frontman Grian Chatten who is seen playing accordion and singing on an isolated windowsill, which flits between an arguing elderly couple and a loving younger couple.
Speaking on the track and video, Chatten says:
“I was living in a tiny little flat in North London with my girlfriend and there was this Hitchcock – esque view of an elderly couple across from us. They had these blazing arguments that sent pigeons flying around, and after each one the man in the couple would come out onto this little balcony he had and just breathe for about 10 minutes. I couldn’t help but imagine it as a reflection of myself and my girlfriend in years to come, and ourselves as a reflection of a younger, happier version of them”
In addition to the latest video, last week the band made their debut appearance on CBS’s The Late Late Show with James Corden. The performance follows on from the band having made their first in-studio TV performance since the pandemic at NBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyersearlier this year. Fontaines D.C. have also just begun a series of North American live dates, which will see the Grammy-nominated band play to sold out venues in Austin, New Jersey + more, before heading onto their highly anticipated UK dates in November.
The dates follow an extensive string of packed out EU / UK festival performances, including a headline slot at Latitude Festival, the band’s return to Glastonbury Festival, and an unforgettable main stage set at Reading Festival which saw a fan join the band on stage to play guitar on “Boys In The Better Land”.
