Cassia

Cassia – Electric Bristol

On a bright evening that felt like summer edging in, Cassia’s feel-good sound made itself right at home in Bristol. Inside Electric (recently rebranded from SWX), the atmosphere was warm, upbeat, and perfectly suited to their breezy, sun-soaked style.

I arrived in time to catch Arcy Drive – a four-piece from New York – and they were a standout in their own right. There was something refreshingly down-to-earth about their performance. Clearly grateful to be playing shows across the UK and Europe, they delivered their set with real heart and energy that quickly won the crowd over.

Cassia opened with Western Front and moved seamlessly through a set that drew heavily from their latest album everyone, outside. Tracks like High TonesFriends and Miles Out brought the room to life, their signature mix of indie, soft groove and sunlit rhythm working its usual magic. It’s a sound built more on feel than flash — and that’s exactly why it works.

By the time they closed out with Reframe and Right There, the venue was swaying and smiling in sync. Cassia didn’t need any tricks or theatrics; the songs and the setting spoke for themselves.

Viagra Boys – O2 Academy Bournemouth

From the first note, the crowd were hanging onto every word frontman Sebastian Murphy delivered - as always, shirtless, tattooed from neck to waist, gliding around the stage in trackies and socks. There was a beautiful contradiction in watching a heavily inked man dance with such fluidity - his movements elegant, loose-hipped, playful and magnetic. Think of a post-punk ballerina!

Razorlight – O2 Guildhall Southampton

By the time Razorlight hit the stage for the first date of their Planet Nowhere tour, it felt like we were all greeting old friends. The band launched straight into their set with energy and enthusiasm. Though there wasn’t much conversation or banter between songs - allowing the music to speak for itself - the moments of excitement came in waves, particularly when they played their well known hits.

Badly Drawn Boy – The 1865 Southampton

When I heard that Badly Drawn Boy was in town playing the Mercury Music Prize winning album ‘The Hour of The Bewilderbeast’ I knew I had to be there. That album was yet another big one for me back when I was starting to fine tune my musical choices thoughout the 90’s and 2000’s.
