Kicking off the evening were London’s four-piece Saint Clair; they wasted little time in making themselves stand out amongst the Exeter crowd.

Their hazy distortion and subtle punk sounds make them seem as if they have been around for years, whilst also showcasing something incredibly fresh. They confidently took over the room while playing their excellent EP Something To Be Said, where the tales of romance and the heartbreak that goes along with it. Judging by the atmosphere in the room and the response from the crowd, it feels safe to say that it will only be a matter of time before Saint Clair will be headlining bigger venues.

The Amazons stormed into the Phoenix with one thing on their mind: make some noise! From the moment that they hit the stage, the sold-out room was turned into a night not to forget. Since the band formed in 2014, there have been a few new members who joined them on stage tonight: Ella McRobb on vocals and keys and George Le Page on drums, adding a new dynamic to the band without taking away what made them so good in the first place.

Tracks old and new were met with heartwarming reactions from fans of all ages. Their latest single Blood On The Bone was the highlight of the show, and it already felt like it belonged in the set. It offered a glimpse of where The Amazons are heading next. For a band who have spent years proving themselves, there was something particularly special about seeing The Amazons bring back that same arena-sizedenergy into a venue like Exeter Phoenix.

From the first beat of ‘Fuzzy Tree’ to the last beat of the closing song, the crowd were swallowed by insane guitar riffs, pounding drums, and the outstanding vocals from undeniably talented Matt Thomson and Ella McRobb.

If the performance at The Phoenix was anything to go by, The Amazons are in their prime. With this level of energy behind them and the momentum they give to their fans, they are a band that needs watching, because next time they roll through Exeter, it will be in a much bigger room or venue.
