Whether you found them from a 2002 TikTok dance trend, or have became a fan of the band over the last 27 years, the big question is, does Skindred still got this?
For fans, the first few songs of the new album will not be new and will fill them full of hope – throwing big bangers at the start of an album like this really opens up for an epic record or an epic disappointment.
Title song, You Got This, has already amassed 1.5 million listens on Spotify and nearly half a million views on YouTube:
It is fair to say that the rest of the album does not disappoint – with hit after hit. As if over a quarter of a century of music isn’t celebration enough, You Got This has very much the positive feel that the title suggests. Even “Broke” with lyrics about not having any money brings us together in a joyful collective of suffering.
When Skindred first hit our Sony Walkman CD players, their unique mashup of Nu Metal and Reggae rap stood them out in a raw and energetic sound we had not heard before. It really feels now, however, that the band has been mixing so many genres for such a long time that they are just writing epic songs throwing in musical seasoning to build the perfect flavour.
In this way, songs like Big Em Up take you on journey through hiphop, Nu-Metal, orchestral parts, hardcore and more in a way that feels completely natural.
This will be an exciting summer to see the crowds going crazy over the new album.
