Portsmouth Guildhall was transformed into a chaotic, electrifying battlefield with Bob Vylan in town. The grime-punk duo, known for their raw energy and searing critique of modern society, delivered a performance that was both visceral and cathartic.
From the moment Bob Vylan’s frontman, Bob, stepped onto the stage, it was clear this was going to be an intense gig. The lights dimmed, the bass dropped, and a wave of anticipation swept across the crowd. The band kicked off with ‘Reign’ instantly setting the tone for the evening. Bob’s delivery was fierce, with each lyric laced with the frustration and defiance that has come to define their sound.
‘Ring The Alarm’ and ‘Right Here’ had the audience shouting back in unison, providing moments of collective release. From standing at the back of the venue, the mosh pit looked like a fun place to be with the atmosphere remaining charged and focused, every note amplifying the sense of urgency in Bob Vylan’s message. Between songs, Bob spoke candidly ‘Me and Bobbie started this band 7 years ago with the intention of speaking about our lives and how we live. Sometimes that has been difficult for people to hear. Everything we have released so far has been done on our own, no big label involved and everything you buy supports everything you see on this stage including all the sparks and the smoke!’
One standout moment for me was during ‘We Live Here’ where the crowd’s energy hit a high, with the Guildhall crowd bouncing. The track’s sharp commentary resonated strongly, and it was again clear that the band’s political themes are embedded in every moment of the show.
In a city that doesn’t often, these days, see such intense performances, Bob Vylan’s night was a memorable experience. The duo proved, once again, that they are one of the most compelling and uncompromising acts in the UK music scene today.
